Mercat del Born

In 1876, one of the most spectacular public markets in all of Europe was built on top of the ruins of the old neighborhood of La Ribera, destroyed in the war of 1714. The work was overseen by Josep Fontseré, the same architect who had urbanized the Ciutadella, who conceived a modern market on the same site as the former Born market. Construction of this new market would take some pressure off the Boquería market and make merchant transport easier given its proximity to the port and railways.
