Convent de Santa Caterina

In 1275 the convent of Santa Caterina stood on what is now the site of the remodeled Mercat de Santa Caterina. That same year, the convent church was inaugurated, becoming one of the city’s main places of catholic worship over the years, comparable in both importance and architecture to the cathedral or Santa Maria del Mar. Both the convent and the church were torn down in 1837 after the ecclesiastical confiscations of Mendizábal. The market that stands there today, which underwent a full refurbishment between 1997 and 2004, was built in 1844.
